Each stage of your sales process is mapped to HubSpot lifecycle stages (buyer funnel), and corresponding Ad Events are sent back to the ad platform. For instance, when a lead progresses to a marketing-qualified lead (MQL), this event is relayed to Google Ads to track conversions against the original keyword or the Facebook/LinkedIn campaign.

Conversion metrics such as leads, qualified leads, quotes, and customers are visible within HubSpot and the ad platform, alongside average costs per lead, qualified lead, quote, and customer. This enables monitoring of advertising performance across platforms. For example, a low cost per lead on Facebook but a high cost per customer may indicate a need to improve ROI from Facebook ads. Similarly, insights from Google Ads can reveal keywords with low cost per lead but unexpectedly high cost per customer, guiding strategic adjustments beyond online interface metrics.

Within HubSpot Ads, you can select which optimisation events to sync with ad platforms by navigating to the Settings page and choosing relevant events. Typically, leads generated online and already recorded as conversions should not be double-counted unless specific criteria are met.

The main optimisation events that can be synced with your ad platforms:

Contact becomes a Subsriber:
This ad event (conversion) will trigger when a contact/company becomes a subscriber in HubSpot. This is not an event you would typically send back to the ad platform because it would already be recorded by online conversion tracking.

Contact becomes a Lead:
This ad event will trigger when a contact/company becomes a lead in HubSpot. This is not an event you would typically send back to the ad platform because it would already be recorded by online conversion tracking.

Contact becomes a Marketing-Qualified Lead (MQL):
The ad event triggers when a contact/company reaches marketing-qualified lead status in HubSpot. This represents the initial offline conversion event that should be sent back to the ad platform. Since every sales process varies, you may need to refine how MQLs are mapped based on specific qualifying criteria such as lead score.

Contact becomes a Sales-Qualified Lead (SQL):
This ad event will trigger when a contact/company becomes a sales-qualified lead in HubSpot. As with MQLs, you will need to define what actions in your sales process define a sales-qualified lead. You may need some workflows to automatically update SQL or use the newer Lead Object stages.

Contact becomes a Deal/Opportunity:
This ad event will trigger when a contact becomes an opportunity. An automatic workflow changes the lifecycle stage to opportunity when a new deal is created. The deal value can also be sent back to the ad platforms as sales revenue. This is particularly useful for companies with sales cycles longer than 3 months because the offline conversion tracking script has a maximum of 3 months cookie duration. (Cookie duration is used alongside the original click ID to determine offline conversions)

Contact becomes a Customer:
This event will trigger when a contact becomes a new customer in HubSpot. As with deals, you can import the deal value into the ad platform to enable ROAS reporting. If you have a short sales cycle of under 3 months, you can just import revenue from customers, not deals.

Minimum audience size for targeting:

  • Google Search Network: At least 1,000 visitors in the last 30 days.
  • Google Display Network: At least 100 visitors in the last 30 days.
  • Facebook Ads: Minimum audience size of 20 users.
